Comics are many different things put together in order to tell a story. They have pictures and words, they can be short, mid-sized, or long, and they can take on several forms. Usually, the long and beautifully illustrated comics are immensely popular among the masses.

What people often forget is that there are smaller comics or comic strips that can make a significant impact. This is why they’re used in newspapers, magazines, and in social media campaigns on the internet. There are three essential features that are the highlights of good comics:

1. Interaction of text and image

One of the most valuable aspects of comics is the text and image interaction. Some comics don’t use text. Such works of art may look aesthetic, but they miss their soul. To create meaning and send the message across, comics must have that wonderful combination of text and image.

On the other hand, there are certain situations when an image is enough to convey the message. One good example would be an image that shows a rising sun. It need not have any text to show that the sun rises the next morning. Punchlines can be used for fun or to convey a serious message.

Usually, they’re utilized for the climax and can be brutal, silly, sad, or romantic. Funny punchlines entertain and also convey an important message at the same time. The word ‘comics’ itself is funny, as it is derived from the Latin ‘comics, which translates as ‘of comedy’.

2. Panels

Panels are one of the things that are unique to comics. They are either square-shaped or rectangle-shaped frames with the related text and images. One of the major functions of panels is to show the sequence of events. They also organize the assorted bits of the comics or comic strips.

It is always the intention of the makers of comics to keep the readers engaged. So, they are used mainly as a tool for character development, action, and pacing. It may happen that the reader doesn’t notice the panels while going through the text and images. This is when the comic is considered to be a real success.

In no way does this mean that panels must not be used. They have to be used, as panels are what makes one feel that he or she is reading comics. They’re an essential part of the overall comic-reading experience.

3. Sequence

When reading comics, readers always move through the panels in a sequential manner. This can be understood from an example. Consider this sentence – ‘He picked up an apple and then a pear and then a plum’. This is all text, but the reader moves through the words in order while reading. For easy comparison, consider the names of fruits as panels and the word ‘then’ as the spaces between them.

This is exactly how the sequence works in both comics and prose. It tells the story without causing any inconvenience to the reader. Sometimes, the sequence of events has to be broken by inserting a frame that refers to a past event. However, this doesn’t create confusion, as it’s always explained with the text in a square or rectangular box.

People all over the world love comic books and comic strips. After all, who doesn’t want to have a good laugh? Comic strips usually take a minute or two to read, depending upon their length. They’re a sequence of images that have captions and balloons with text in them. Comic strips and comic books are used to tell a story. They make use of drawings and cartoon characters for storytelling.

Some of them are serious while many are humorous. Comic strips are often used in newspapers and magazines. Today, they’re also widely used in different forms of advertising and online promotions. They’re made by professional graphic artists or cartoonists. Here, we’ve tried to explain the process:

1. Finding ideas

A comic strip must be treated like a short story. It needs to have a beginning, a middle, and an end. So, it would be a good idea to break down a comic strip into 3 parts. Every story of the comic strip is based on a good idea. It is, therefore, necessary to find some good ideas.

Writing down everything that comes to mind helps in formulating a good story. Next would be finding ideas for characters, expression, speech, and settings. It is also necessary that every part has some action and the comic strip has a powerful ending.

2. Create the frames

When the ideas are formed, the next step would be to create the frames. The frame size would depend on the available space and the number of characters and objects to be included. The appropriate place for speech bubbles must be clearly marked. Utmost care should be taken that the frames are not too big or too small. What’s truly important is that they must utilize the available space in the best way.

3. Draw the characters

The drawing of characters would depend entirely on the skill of the cartoonist or graphic artist. For the ones who are not skilled graphic artists, using basic shapes to draw characters is recommended. Stick figures are relatively easier to create and won’t take much time.

To create sound effects, starbursts and speech bubbles must be created in an appropriate manner. In the absence of some excellent digital gadgets to create the characters, a pen and pencil can be used. This would make it easier to erase the mistakes.

4. Add text in the speech bubbles

Now, it’s time to put in some matter in the speech bubbles. It would be a good practice to double-check the spellings while adding text into the speech bubbles. For creating maximum impact, the size of the letter must be increased when a character is shouting. Showing the speech in bold would also be effective. Bold capital letters would help anyone understand that the character is shouting.

5. Add the remaining details

After the text has been added in the speech bubbles, the remaining parts can be drawn. These parts include facial expressions of the characters, movement lines, background items, and shadows on the floor.

6. Review the entire comic strip

Once the comic strip has been created as planned, it would be a good idea to review it. If any changes are required, they must be done immediately. Everything must be perfect before publishing the comic strip. Even a small mistake can ruin its appeal and even make it look like a big failure.

Over the past few decades, there have been many actors who played comic book superheroes on screen. However, there’s a big difference between playing a superhero and immortalizing it through one’s performance. It’s never easy for an actor to play a character who has become the heartthrob of millions through comics.

The actor chosen for the role carries the big responsibility of living up to the character’s persona and fame. There are certainly a few such actors who played the superhero role to perfection. Here are some of them:

1. Christian Bale

In the past, several actors have played Batman on screen. Although all of them were brilliant in their own right, it was Christian Bale who left a lasting impression. Many believe that no other actor could’ve done justice to the role. Christopher Nolan, the director of the three Batman films, and Bale were praised for their brilliance. They truly raised the bar for all the superhero films to be made.

Bale had to do a lot of hard work to get into the skin of the character. He put on a few pounds of muscle to suit the role of Batman. On the other hand, he also had to play Bruce Wayne, a wealthy womanizer. He played both roles to such perfection that he left millions in awe.

2. Gal Gadot

She played Wonder Woman, the most high-profile superheroine from the world of comic books. This was quite a challenging role, as she had to keep a good balance between innocence and toughness. It had taken many years to bring the most popular female comic book character to the big screen.

Finally, Gadot appeared on the big screen as Wonder Woman for the first time in 2017. Fans of the superheroine were extremely delighted to see the first true female superhero of the decade. They really felt that this Wonder Woman film was worth the wait.

3. Tobey Maguire

The immense success of his three Spider-Man movies brought Marvel’s comic book superheroes to the limelight. Tobey Maguire successfully pulled off the two contrasting characters of Peter Parker and Spider-Man. In this film series, he fought some of the toughest supervillains.

They were the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, the new Goblin, and Venom. He never allowed his love for Mary Jane to come in the way of his duty. One of the most memorable lines from this movie is ‘with great power comes great responsibility.

4. Chris Evans

Chris Evans was somewhat written off when he starred in the Fantastic Four series. Everything changed when he played the role of the comic book superhero, Captain America. In the film, he appeared as the ideal embodiment of the physicality and morality of the original comic book character. The film is set in the times of the Second World War.

It portrays Evans as a frail Steve Rogers, who gets transformed into the super-soldier, Captain America. No one would’ve imagined that the Captain America trilogy would leave the three Iron Man films behind. With the trilogy, Marvel successfully explored certain things that had not been achieved yet in the superhero movies.

Many movies based on comic books or comic book characters have been made over the past few decades. However, it’s almost impossible to find movies that do justice to the comic books they are based on. Much of the qualities of the characters are left out and the script is rarely up to the mark.

However, there are a few good movies that had an excellent script and were made well. The best movies are the ones that stay almost true to their original plot. Besides, they must be aesthetically pleasing as well. Here we’ve listed some of the best movies that didn’t compromise on their artistic and professional integrity:

1. Spider-Man

Watching someone take up the responsibility of making this world better by wearing a vigilante mask is truly inspiring. This is what makes this movie worth watching besides all its technical brilliance. Peter Parker is just another boy of the neighbourhood when he is not Spider-Man.

This incredible character was originally created in the 1960s by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The most popular Spider-Man movie was released in 2002. Even today, those who’ve watched the movie remember that shy and quiet Peter Parker. He gets bitten by a genetically modified spider, and the rest is history.

2. The Crow

A crow resurrects Eric Draven from his grave. He goes on to avenge his fiancee, who was brutally murdered on the eve of their wedding in Detroit. He had died at the scene as well. The Crow was released in 1994 and is a film adaptation of the comic book by James O’Barr. Brandon Lee, the actor who played Eric Draven in this film, died after getting hurt on the set.

It occurred due to defective ammunition, which was used during the filming. The film was received well and Brandon Lee’s performance was described as iconic. Even the film’s original soundtrack topped the music charts at the time.

3. V for Vendetta

Based on the 1982 comic book created by Alan Moore, V for Vendetta features Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving. The film is about a group of anarchists fighting against a futuristic oppressive neo-fascist regime in the UK. The character ‘V’ is played by Hugo Weaving, while ‘Evey’ is played by Natalie Portman.

In the film, Evey is a young working-class woman who ends up getting tangled in V’s mission. The film is truly captivating with its action-packed plot and some memorable performances. While it was released in 2005, the film remains a classic.

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

This is a lighthearted film based on the comic book by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Although the first three films are packed with humour, they also have a bit of action. While the other movies of the franchise would be disappointing, the first three are fabulously entertaining.

These films were released in the 1990s when their comic book versions were a big hit. Combining the dialogue and narrative with integrity, the first film truly adheres to the comic book plot. The second and third films moved away from their comic book plots, but still featured elements of their sources.

Business organizations take their data quite seriously, but many individuals struggle to understand all the complex information. This problem leads to a big data consumption gap. However, there are some innovative solutions today that are of immense help in getting rid of such problems. One of them is the use of data comics.

Simply put, data comics involve the use of cartoon characters and comic strips to simplify complex data. They convey key information in a manner that can be easily understood by even a layperson. Besides, all such information is presented in a humorous and entertaining way. The use of data comics also helps decision-makers in the organization to understands the insights better.

In the near future, the data analysts may take on the additional responsibility of delivering insights as stories. This means they’ll become the new-age corporate storytellers. One of the major functions of their job might involve looking for innovative ways to engage their audience.

Big help for the decision-makers

A sales dashboard of a company shows its trend of sales for a certain period. It often explains the sales trends with some colourful charts, bars, and curves. What it doesn’t generally show is the explanation of the hidden insights. They include the rate of growth and performance of each business unit. Such insights are always crucial for decision-makers of a business organization.

When data comics is brought into the picture, it narrates how much the sales have increased. They also identify the business unit or units that have done well. It is clear from both these scenarios that the second dashboard saves a lot of time for the decision-maker. Any decision-maker would prefer the dashboard with the comic narrative.

Functions of data comics

Data comics tells the entire story of the data to be presented. They basically serve the crucial insights and findings on a plate. Now, the decision-maker just has to take a look at the comics to understand the findings. He or she won’t have to spend a good amount of time analyzing the charts. The decision-makers of business organizations are always busy with some crucial works.

They don’t usually have the time to go through the data and analyses. Data comics would help them in getting all the important insights instantly. They perform three important functions. The first is focusing on the right problem. The second is providing solutions to the problem, and the third is communicating insights in the right manner to decision-makers.

No need for graphs and charts

Data comics convey only important and relevant information. They may or may not need graphs and charts for communicating the key insights. Graphs and charts may be needed when the decision-maker wants to look at certain numbers. Sometimes they may be required as support for the insights given through the comic visuals.

Most of the time, charts and graphs are not required while providing important insights to the decision-maker. The main purpose of using data comics is to simplify all the complex data for the benefit of users. It leads to the better judgment of data and makes the decision-making process quicker.

There are many technical concepts that are quite tough for a layperson to understand. Most of these concepts are explained through visualizations, graphics, and maps. Just presenting data in front of an individual and letting him or her do the exploration doesn’t help. This doesn’t give any detailed insights into the data.

In order to communicate the insights to an individual, a story must be told along with the data. The only medium that has been used for many decades to tell stories graphically is comics. Everyone is familiar with comics, yet they’re rarely used for data-driven storytelling. This is where the need for data comics arises.

Data comics explained

Comics are an excellent combination of visual artistry, design, and narrative techniques. Their creation, therefore, requires certain skills that an average individual may not possess. Data comics are often added for giving a visual effect and driving engagement. They are created by combining multiple visualizations and involves the use of comic strips.

Such layouts comprise a sequence of panels and each of them has both textual and graphical elements. When arranged in a sequence, they form a story. Using this story, complex data is presented in a way that’s interesting as well as entertaining.

The key aspects of data comics

A data comic won’t be truly comic unless it leverages the visual language of the comics effectively. Designers can make data comics effective by including certain aspects that drive engagement:

1. Rendering and layout: Using cartoon-style rendering, clipped content can be redrawn by the designer to emphasize the comic medium. This would bring the audience into a comic state of mind. A pre-existing knowledge of comics would certainly help in this regard.

2. Comic characters: In a data comic, it is important to include characters that complement the visualization of data. Designers can refer a visual library of the characters. They can also make use of the best artistic talents to create the characters. The benefit of giving the story a human face is that it makes the narrative more personal and engaging.

3. Visual elements: The common visual elements utilized in comics can also be used to propel the narrative. Examples of this are highlights and motion lines. With the use of such elements, the attention of the audience is directed to specific parts of the visualization.

4. Thoughts, captions, and speech: In sequential art, the visuals are complemented by captions, speech balloons, and thought balloons. A data comic must also follow a similar format. This is extremely important in driving the story and guiding the reader.

Measuring the success of data comics

The ultimate purpose of creating a data comic is to convey the story to the audience. When it is finally presented, all of its panels must be visible. A single-panel navigation mode on the screen would serve this purpose. It helps the viewer to navigate backwards and forwards sequentially in the comic. The data comic thus created can be shared through social media or email lists.

Responses from the users would be crucial in understanding whether it was a success or a failure. If it fails, the teams involved in creating the data comic must try to understand where they went wrong. This would help them learn from their mistakes and make the necessary improvements.

Individuals of all ages love to read comics, as they’re a great source of entertainment. Those involved in the field of education have begun wondering whether comics can be effective in educating children. Many believe that comics can be used to create opportunities for better learning.

They are also of the opinion that comics can play an important role in boosting creativity. In recent times, many teachers are using comics to educate their students. By reading comic books, students can have some benefits associated with learning:

1. Increased interest in reading

One might wonder how comics can help children at school. One of the important benefits of reading comics is that it keeps children interested in books. Reading plain text would certainly result in boredom. When it comes to comics, a brilliant combination of text and comic characters makes reading a pleasant experience.

They’re always eager to know what might happen next. As a result of this curiosity, they keep reading further. This gradually develops an interest in reading them, which helps them in their later stages of life.

2. Improved vocabulary and language skills

The plain text used in the books makes the process of education predictable and dull. Children would never get bored with comics, as they cannot usually tell what would happen on the next page. As a result, children develop a keen interest in reading comic books.

In the process of reading, they also develop much-needed language skills. As they pay attention closely to what the characters are saying, they get to know more about sentence formation. They also come across several new words.

Children are always curious to know the meaning of such words. They usually learn their meanings by asking their parents or teachers. They can also have a look in the dictionary to know the exact meanings. This greatly improves their vocabulary.

3. Improved learning in dyslexic children

Students with learning disabilities can be taught how to read and pronounce words by allowing them to read comics. Dyslexic children learn better with the help of imagery and visual representation of emotions. Comic books use both these elements.

This makes such books highly effective for dyslexic children to improve their learning process. Usually, students with dyslexia respond positively to the visualizations in comic books. In this way, they can avoid the stress caused by reading materials that are entirely in plain text.

4. Simplified learning process

Children usually don’t pay a lot of attention to something that doesn’t interest them. This has always been a problem with textbooks that have an overload of plain text. The educators of today need to include methods that are simpler to understand. Comics is one such tool, which effectively makes use of graphics and text.

As a result, children read and understand the stories contained in them in a better way. The traditional methods of learning have been in use for years, but they’ve not been very effective. Today, the world is evolving owing to the extensive use of technology. With the use of text and images, the learning process can be simplified to a great extent.

Comic books may not help students learn all the subjects. However, they can certainly help them in mastering the language. Their improved language and vocabulary would certainly help them in learning the other subjects with greater ease.

There was a time when heroes from folklore ruled the hearts of many. Some of the prominent ones among them were Zorro and Robin Hood. Then came the comic books, which created the most popular superheroes of our times. They not only ruled the hearts of the young and old but also the box office. Some of the highest-grossing movies of the 21st century were superhero films.

Choosing the superheroes and placing them in a list has never been an easy task. It would definitely spark a debate on the internet, which may go on endlessly. Nevertheless, here are some of the greatest superheroes in the history of comic books:

Batman

The caped crusader is the most popular comic book character of recent times. He is the sole heir to the vast fortunes of Thomas Wayne. He was once powerless to such an extent that he couldn’t prevent the murder of his parents.

With great determination to fight the criminals, he dedicates himself to becoming the greatest detective in the world. He trains his mind and body and achieves the peak of human excellence. The mind of Batman is considered as his greatest weapon. If given enough time for preparation, he can defeat any of his enemies.

Spiderman

He is the one who changed everything. Spiderman is not like those billionaire playboys living the greatest lives in their skyscrapers. He was once just another 15-year-old guy dealing with his regular problems. At one point he gains some superpowers. He then fights criminals as ‘Spiderman’ while continuing with his regular life as ‘Peter Parker’.

Spiderman endured immense pain from losing his parents. He carried the guilt in him for his failure to stop a criminal who later killed his uncle. All of this gave him the feel of a real person than any of the other superheroes before him.

Superman

He’s the most famous superhero who inspired all the other superheroes that emerged after him. The inspiration behind his creation was mainly the Greek mythological figures. He is the last son of Krypton, sent from a dying planet to Earth. Raised by the kind farmers in Kansas, he is told all the good things about America.

Later, when he becomes aware of his superpowers, he moves to the city of Metropolis. He brings hope to the masses as a crime-fighter and stands against criminals and super-villains. Superman is always portrayed as an optimist who leads by example to make this world a better place.

Wonder Woman

She is one of the most powerful superheroes in the DC Comics universe. An ideal superheroine, she influenced many strong female characters of comic books. Some of them were Captain Marvel, Power Girl, Vixen, and Storm. She was crafted by her mother from clay and given life by the Greek Gods.

She has been depicted as the daughter of Zeus and Hippolyta in the recent versions. The source of her superpowers are her divine origins. Her raw strength is considered to be greater than the Martian Manhunter or Superman.
